Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question? Find the answers to our most common queries in our FAQs below.
Where are you located?
Shimungwe Lodge is located in the Thornybush Nature Reserve – part of the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. This is a globally recognised wilderness conservation area with open borders to the Kruger National Park, where animals are free to roam over more than 20,000 square kilometres of pristine bushveld.
What is a typical day on safari like?
The day starts at sunrise with a 3-4 hour morning safari followed by breakfast at the lodge. Guests have free time to relax during the day and make use of our lodge facilities, including the pool, lounge and honesty bar. Following a light lunch, the afternoon safari departs for another 3-4 hours, arriving back at the lodge after dark. Dinner is typically served around the boma fire or at the dining area.
What animals can I expect to see at Shimungwe Lodge?
Shimungwe is part of the Greater Kruger, an unfenced wilderness area open to the Kruger National Park. As such, every day is different. Typical sightings include the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) as well as hippos and plains game such as zebras, impalas, wildebeest and giraffes. Other species you might come across are hyenas and African wild dogs not to mention the diversity of birds, reptiles and nocturnal wildlife.
What should I pack for my safari?
In summer, you should pack comfortable, cool clothing and a lightweight rain jacket. Sandals, swimwear, a hat and something to cover your arms and ankles in the evenings if you are concerned about mosquito bites. One pair of closed shoes is advisable.
In winter, add warm layers and a scarf and gloves as mornings and evenings can be cold.
Other recommended items include sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars and cameras.
What is the best time of year to go on safari?
Safaris are a year-round activity! Those who prefer birds or photography might prefer a summer safari whereas winters are ideal for cooler and drier weather. However, you are sure to have amazing wildlife sightings at any time of year at Shimungwe.
Are children welcome at the lodge?
Yes! We are a family-friendly lodge. Children aged 6 years and over are welcome on game drives. Unfortunately, we do not have a babysitting service so one adult will need to remain behind if a child is not able to join the game drive.
Do you cater to special dietary requirements?
Yes! As a small lodge, we have a plated menu to ensure all of our food is fresh and delicious. However, you are more than welcome to advise us of your dietary requirements in advance. Our chef can assist with most requests including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or specific allergies.
Is there Wi-Fi available at the lodge?
Yes! We have wifi installed in the main lodge and each suite. It is sufficient for web browsing, social media and even live video calling at the main lodge where the signal is strongest. Due to our remote location, there is poor cellphone reception.
Do I need to take anti-malarial medication?
Thornybush Nature Reserve is considered a low-risk malaria area. The risk is lowest during the dry months of our winter. You should consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice regarding medication.
How do I get to Shimungwe Lodge?
Our nearest airport is Hoedspruit Eastgate – which is less than a 30-minute drive from Shimungwe Lodge. We can arrange an airport transfer on request.
From Johannesburg, it is roughly 6 hours by vehicle. For self-driven guests, please consult our directions as Google Maps does not take you the correct way. These can be downloaded from our website.
What is the weather like in Thornybush Nature Reserve?
The weather in the Lowveld is defined by two distinct seasons:
Spring/Summer occurs between October and April. Days are typically warm to hot (over 40 degrees) with occasional thunderstorms.
Autumn/winter occurs from May to September. Days are typically mild (under 30 degrees) and dry. Mornings can be very chilly with some cooler, overcast days expected.
Can I charge my devices?
Yes! Shimungwe has mains power year-round. Our suites feature both 3 round pins (type M) found mostly in South Africa and 2 round pins found across much of Europe (type C). We also have a dedicated USB charging point in every suite. You should bring your own adaptors where necessary.
Can you go off-road on safari?
Yes! Our guides are highly trained and will go off-road where it is safe and ethical to do so to ensure the best sightings and experience.
